08-22-1894: In a European Greco-Roman match, Tom Cannon defeats Tom McInerney in Liverpool. Through this match some promoters have claimed a lineage of “European champion” through which George Hackenschmdit later solidified his claim to be the “World Champion”. Historian Gherardo Bonini has since disputed this “championship” stating that his research has shown that no such championship existed.
