Writer/director Seth Breedlove and his Small Town Monsters crewmates have produced another excellent cryptozoology documentary, On the Trail of Bigfoot: The Journey. While the film follows the usual Small Town Monsters format of exploring the history and locale of high-strangeness sightings and providing intriguing eyewitness accounts in the form of interviews, what sets this apart from its predecessors is the more deeply personal approach that Breedlove describes and the exploration of the camaraderie between Sasquach hunters.

Expanding on the 2019 series On the Trail of Bigfoot, this new installment finds Breedlove reflecting on missing his filmmaking travels to American wildernesses during pandemic lockdowns and his eagerness to get back in touch with nature. He and his Small Town Monsters crew members journey to New York’s Adirondack Mountains to explore Bigfoot sightings there, and they are awestruck — as will be viewers unfamiliar or only slightly familiar with the area — at how huge and beautiful the area is. Perhaps it is large and remote enough to support and hide a Sasquatch breeding population?

During their travels, Breedlove and company spend time with Bigfoot hunters and researchers. The camaraderie that these people find in their endeavors is another intriguing point of the documentary.

The technical aspects and storytelling style of On the Trail of Bigfoot: The Journey — from the direction, editing, and gorgeous cinematography to the solid narration, balanced tone of the presentation, and the respect toward its interview subjects — are as excellent as always from Breedlove and his Small Town Monsters crew. Previous films from the crew include The Mothman Legacy, Invasion on Chestnut Ridge, and On the Trail of UFOs. Truly a thinking person’s Bigfoot documentary, this film comes highly recommended.
