09-23-1880: Portland, ME: City Hall: Attendance: “Large Crowd”: W.M. Johnston defeated Thomas Lynch in Collar & Elbow... Capt. J.C. Daly defeated Duncan C. Ross in Greco-Roman... W.M. Johnston defeated Thomas Lynch in Catch-as-Catch-Can... J.C. Daly defeated Duncan C. Ross in Side-Hold rules... Duncan C. Ross then challenged Daly to a handicap rules match saying he was unfairly treated in the earlier matches and could throw Daly “5 times in 10 minutes” and then his backer put up the money for the match. Daly’s men, however, announced that the Mayor had forbidden the match and the use of City Hall past this point. It was soon discovered that this was not true, but the crowd had dispersed and the handicap match did not come off.
