The following is taken from Author and Pioneer Era Pro Wrestling Historian Karl Stern’s book DragonKingKarl’s Pioneer Era Pro Wrestling Omnibus.
1836:
05-31-1836: Following his death at the Alamo in San Antonio, TX, many newspapers run obituaries about the frontiersman turned politician, Davy Crockett. In the Huron Reflector newspaper out of Ohio it is mentioned that David “Davy” Crockett was also an accomplished wrestler. There is no record of Davy Crockett actually wrestling a match. Despite stories to the contrary, Davy Crockett never actually wrestled a bear either.
10-15-1836: The Huntinton, DE Gazette newspaper lambasts resident Evan McDowell who they call the consummate villain. It is said that McDowell ran off with his wife’s sister. He is said to be five foot ten inches tall with a scar across his eye and lip. It is said he is fond of wrestling and gambling.
