1833:

05-07-1833: The more things change, the more they stay the same. A letter appears in the Vermont Gazette asking the editors if the perceived lawlessness in their towns should be blamed on “Democrats” and a decline in social values or on sporting games like footraces and wrestling that encourage lawlessness.

05-17-1833: An ad in the Charleston, SC Charleston Mercury newspaper advertises boxing matches, as well as, a “scientific wrestling match” for a show at Lege’s Long Room. The names of the wrestlers are not mentioned.
