Lucha Libre Referee El Buho Killed by Piledriver in Lucha Libre Match

Multiple established Mexican news outlets published reports on October 7–8, 2026, confirming that veteran lucha libre referee Gerardo Germán Pineda, known professionally as "El Búho," died following an incident involving a piledriver during a wrestling match.

This is a legitimate, breaking Mexican wrestling news story, not an internet death hoax.

What happened?

According to reporting from Mexican news outlets:

  • Date: Tuesday night, October 6, into Wednesday morning, October 7, 2026.

  • Location: Centro Deportivo Cultural 11 de Julio, Mineral de la Reforma, Hidalgo, Mexico.

  • Deceased: Gerardo Germán Pineda, "El Búho," reportedly 75 years old.

  • Match: El Hijo de Fishman vs. Máscara Sagrada.

  • Incident: El Hijo de Fishman reportedly delivered a variation of the piledriver, called a martinete in Mexico, to the referee.

  • Aftermath: El Búho collapsed in the ring. Emergency responders subsequently confirmed his death.

  • Legal developments: El Hijo de Fishman was detained by Mexican authorities while they investigated a possible case of involuntary manslaughter (homicidio culposo).

Importantly, although the incident and death are confirmed, the precise medical cause of death and any criminal responsibility have not yet been conclusively established publicly. More details when available.
