My least favorite Halloween candy of all time is none other than candy corn but despite the fact that I hate it in all its chewy, waxy glory, it holds the top spot in most states in America as "favorite Halloween candy" yuk! 😝
LOVE it or HATE IT??
WHY? Is candy corn so popular? 🎃
The waxy coated tri-colored candy was supposedly invented by a man named George Renninger who was working at the Wunderlee Candy Company in Philadelphia, PA.
It was invented in the 1800's & was at first called "chicken feed", because it resembled kernels of corn. Interestingly enough it started being manufactured by a company named Goelitz Confectionery Co. which today is widely know as "Jelly Belly".
The main ingredients remain the same today as back in the 1800's consisting of sugar, corn syrup & marshmallow. They were stirred in large black kettles & poured by hand (one color at a time) into molds. Thanks to machines & technology jelly belly can turn out as many as 1,200 kernels a second.
Brach's as well as Jelly Belly manufacture this waxy little candy producing approximately 9 billion pieces annually.
