During the days of Japan's military dictatorship, Sumo is taught to Samurai warriors as a means of fighting. Soldiers are also now trained in an off-shoot style of grappling called Jiu Jitsu which eventually develops into it's own stand alone art form.
The ancient Japanese Samurai warriors were taught wrestling and grappling.
