1897 (unspecified): The Allen & Ginters Tobacco company releases sports cards featuring various athletes. The wrestlers included in the set were: Joe Acton, William Muldoon, Thiebaud Bauer, James H. McLaughlin, John McMahon, and Young Bibby. Baseball players, oarsmen, boxers, rifleists, and pool players are also featured.
01-02-1897: Jim Londos (Chris Theopelos) is born in Argos, Greece.
03-16-1897: Farmer Burns fails to throw Tom Jenkins in a match in Cleveland, OH.
08-28-1897: Evan “Strangler” Lewis defeats Tom Clayton in London, England for the “world championship”.
10-26-1897: Dan McLeod defeats Farmer Burns in Indianapolis, IN for the American title.
